Quick Preview of TCM in April

The tentative April schedule for Turner Classic Movies is now available online!

The April Star of the Month will be Laurence Olivier.

Over 20 films starring and sometimes also directed by Olivier will be shown on Wednesday evenings. The lineup will include many of Olivier's best-known films, as well as a few more obscure titles.

April 17th will feature my favorite Olivier movies, all based on literary classics and all released in 1939 or 1940: WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939), REBECCA (1940), and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1940).

There's also an evening of Olivier's Shakespeare films, including HAMLET (1948), which I watched just a few weeks ago.

There are plenty of baseball movies on TCM in April, as well as Westerns and fantasies.

Additionally, there are multi-film tributes to Lon Chaney Sr., Doris Day, Melvyn Douglas, Robert Ryan, Jean Negulesco, Charlie Chaplin, Eddie Albert, Guy Kibbee, Debra Paget, and Shirley Temple.

I'm delighted to see the excellent Paramount film SO PROUDLY WE HAIL! (1943) on the schedule, which depicts the trials of nurses serving on Bataan and Corregidor. It stars Claudette Colbert, Veronica Lake, and the Oscar-nominated Paulette Goddard.

From the April schedule I also particularly recommend a charming little RKO musical, WALKING ON AIR (1936), starring Ann Sothern and Gene Raymond.

I'll have much more information about TCM in April as that month draws near. In the meantime, February is 31 Days of Oscar month, and the March Star of the Month is Greer Garson.

Update: TCM in April: Highlights.
